Want to hear a joke before the rest of the city does? That’s what New Material Night is for. Every Sunday at 8 PM, Toronto comedians bring the newest stuff they’ve got to the Backroom stage.
What is New Material Night?
It’s a stand-up show built on fresh material. Some of it was written this week. Some of it is a bit a comic is about to take on the road. All of it is happening in front of you first.
It’s loose and it’s honest. You get to watch a joke get built in real time, and when something lands for the first time, you were there for it.
Why it’s worth your Sunday
- You hear it first. The jokes you’ll see on bigger stages later often start here.
- Every week is different. New material means no two Sundays are the same show.
- It’s a small room. About 55 seats, so every seat is close to the stage.
- There’s a full bar. Grab a drink and settle in.
Stay for Feedback at 10 PM
After New Material Night, stick around for Feedback: Happy Hour Open Mic at 10 PM. Comics draw from the bucket for 90-second sets, then get live feedback on stage. It’s an open mic, not the pro show, and it’s a lot of fun to watch.
